Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children and affects approximately 34 million Americans. Asthma is a common lung disorder that causes inflammation and muscle spasm of the small airways in the lungs. Symptoms include coughing, wheezing, chest tightness and/or shortness of breath. It may develop at any age, but is commonly present during childhood. With the right treatment, children with asthma improve over time. Adult with asthma can receive treatment as well, however it is less likely to be outgrown. With right professionals, strategies, and treatment asthma can be well controlled.

Asthmatics may have one or more of the following triggers:

Diagnosis

Asthma is suspected when the characteristic symptoms occur during exercise, colds, or allergic reactions. A favorable response to asthma medicines is suggestive of the diagnosis as well. Diagnosis and treatment of patients requires periodic exams and lung function measurements starting by age 5 or 6. Spirometry is used to measure the amount and rate of air flow from the lungs. Other diagnostic tests are methacholine challenge, measurement of exhaled nitric oxide, skin tests, chest x-rays, and blood work. If symptoms are suspected then testing and treatment is needed from professional allergists to get the best outcome.
